St. Mary School runs a ministry called A Cuddle and a Prayer Blankie Ministry in which they create handmade fleece blankets for donation. We were lucky to be the recipients of a batch of these beautiful blankies on behalf of the new NICU at Danbury Hospital, and we had the pleasure of delivering these blankies last week.

The students at St. Mary School created these wonderful blankies to the size specifications of NICU isolettes, and I know that they will bring great comfort to the children and families who receive them!

Danbury Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

brought in 247 books!

These books will go to great use as parents read them to their NICU babies, or siblings in the NICU curl up with a good book to pass the time. And what's more, each family will have the opportunity to take a special book home with them as a keepsake at the end of their stay! How special a gift you have given them, where they can look back with that child and say, "this was the book I used to read to you in the NICU." Danbury Hospital NICU Book Drive

Danbury Hospital is gearing up to open their *BRAND NEW* NICU, and Doing Good In Her Name would like to help them out by providing a bookshelf of brand new books for kids of all ages.

This bookshelf will reside in Danbury's NICU, and be accessible for NICU patients, siblings, and families to use. At the end of their stay, patients and siblings will be able to take the books home if they wish.

Because of the delicate immune systems of some NICU patients, we can only accept brand new books at this time. We will be collecting them through June 1st.

Last weekend, we took a trip to the Doing Good In Her Name P.O. Box, and came home with a large yellow envelope. When we opened it up, we just could not believe what we were seeing. There was a large stack of gift cards and checks inside. Our initial thought was that I had somehow sent the cards from our Holiday Gift Card and Fundraiser drive to the wrong address and someone had kindly returned it to me! That's how big the stack was! Boy were we in for a shock. Inside we found the following note from a woman whose grandson had received a Doing Good In Her Name package during his time at CCMC's NICU:

January 15, 2011

Last April my grandson was born prematurely at Hartford Hospital (CCMC's NICU). He got wonderful medical care, but I also remember the personal touches. He received a book and stuffed animal, blanket, and some preemie clothes. Those gifts means so much to my daughter and son-in-law during a very stressful time.

When my daughter told me about your organization I thought it was a wonderful idea. The gift cards are a great idea. I remember how nice it was for my daughter to get out of the hospital for just a quick bite at Friendly's.

I have a group of women friends who have been together for over 30 years. Each Christmas we would exchange presents. This year we decided to donate to Doing Good In Her Name instead of exchanging gifts. I also brought up the idea at my office, and everyone was very receptive.

Enclosed you will find the donations of money and gift cards for Doing Good In Her Name. I am sure they will be put to good use.

An Update...

Please bear with us as we are a few weeks behind in posting donations. As many of you know, we are eagerly awaiting the arrival of Peyton's little brother and sister this month. Because of some not so great weather in the northeast, and being slowed down a bit by the pregnancy, we have only been able to get to the P.O. Box every few weeks. Today we were overjoyed to find that two wonderful packages were waiting for us at the Post Office - one from Anthony and Holly Haas, and the other from Patti Moran. We will get both of these donations posted this week.

Our First Danbury Hospital Drop Off Thank You Western Connecticut State University O.W.L's

for organizing a wonderful Giving Tree Program for Doing Good In Her Name this past holiday season.

We were thrilled when Myrna, who is the Vice President for WCSU's O.W.L. (Older Wiser Learners) Program, contacted us in August to let us know that the O.W.L's had chosen Doing Good In Her Name to be the recipients of their Giving Tree Program this year. Over the course of November and December, Myrna and the O.W.L's collected several bags just brimming with beautiful donations such as clothing, books, toys, bottles of hand sanitizer, gift cards, teethers, and blankets to benefit the critically ill infants being treated in the NICU at Danbury Hospital.

After meeting with Myrna to pick up the donations, Peyton's Grandmother, Elizabeth Roberts, took the items over to Danbury Hospital for delivery, and met with Grace Linhard, the Vice President of Danbury Hospital's Development Fund.

Very generously, she donated this gift card to Doing Good In Her Name, asking that we put it to use for the critically ill infants at CCMC.

When we received the gift card, we contacted CCMC to see which item from Macy's would come in the most handy for them. After reviewing the Macy's site, the Child Life Specialist chose this set of foam rubber tiles:

We are very excited to announce that Doing Good In Her Name has now forged a relationship with the NICU at Danbury Hospital. Danbury's NICU is a level IIIB Neonatal Intensive Care Unit that treats infants born ill or prematurely.

This is a very exciting time for Danbury Hospital's NICU as they are currently upgrading their entire NICU facility to include all private patient rooms, with attached resting accommodations for the parents of these critically ill infants. In addition to the private rooms, Danbury is also creating respite rooms, teaching areas, and a private hospice family accommodation area, where parents and extended family can gather privately with those infants requiring hospice care.

Thanks to YOUR amazing generosity, our item donation drive has been such a HUGE success that we can now shift our focus through the holiday season to providing financial support to the families of critically ill children being treated at CCMC!

Having a critically ill infant puts an incredible financial strain on the infant's family. Beyond the medical expenses, there are many other unexpected expenses including lost time from work, travel expenses, parking expenses, food expenses while at the hospital, etc.

Through Doing Good In Her Name, you can help support these families in two very special (and tax deductible!) ways:

Every gift card donated, will be distributed to the parents/family of a critically ill infant being treated at CCMC. Gift Cards in any amount are greatly appreciated from the following establishments. These cards are easiest for patients' families to use, as these establishments are located at or near CCMC.

FINANCIAL DONATIONS:

Tax Deductible donations can also be made and will be used to provide the families of critically ill infants with parking passes and food vouchers for the hospital cafeteria, as well as with financial support.

Parking at the hospital is quite expensive, and we know from personal experience what a great help these passes can be in alleviating some of the financial burden that families with very sick babies are under.

Cafeteria food vouchers help a great deal too, making the prospect of grabbing a quick bite much easier for these families during those times when it is impossible to get away from the hospital for a meal.

Just a quick note to thank all those who helped us spread the word about Doing Good In Her Name across Facebook on Peyton's Birthday (Sept. 4) and to let you know that we appreciate the continued efforts in getting the word out there. Over 50 new followers joined our page as a result of your efforts. Thank you.

We also wanted to send a note out to those who have sent donations in the last few weeks, but not yet seen them posted. We apologize, we are a little behind, and are planning to visit the P.O. Box this Saturday and get them photographed and uploaded after.

THIRD DROP OFF COMPLETE!

I apologize that this post is actually a little overdue.

We met with Mary, the AMAZING social worker from the oncology floor at CCMC a little over a week ago, and did our third drop off! Included in the over three hundred items that we delivered, were dozens of pieces of clothing, mobiles, over a hundred donated books, some wonderfully hand-knitted hats and sweaters, and countless bottles, toys, and pacifiers!

Additionally we brought the nearly 700 dollars in donations and gift cards that you have sent in since our last drop off!

All in all, a huge success!

It's not often that I share a story at the front of a donation post. That being said, it is also not often that we receive a donation like the one we received today. For an occasion such as this one, sharing this story seemed fitting.

I have never identified myself as being a short person. At 5 foot 7, my height hasn't been an issue for me. That is, of course, until getting our Post Office Box for Doing Good In Her Name. When I registered for the Box, I got the last one that was available, a Box at the very top row, and even being on the taller side for women, there are parts of it that remain out of my reach.

Over the last few weeks I have been unable to make it to the PO Box. Our local Post Office cut back on counter time, presumably because of the economy, and I have found myself heading out with the best of intentions, but just barely missing my window of opportunity with their new hours. Luckily today I made it in time.

I have a routine at the Post Office. I grab what I can see, and then stick my hand in, sort of feeling around for any pickup tickets or mail I may have missed towards the back. Today, after pulling out two pickup tickets, I felt around from my tipped toes and came up empty. Just for good measure, I gave a little hop on my toes, and to my surprise, at the back of the Box, flush against its floor, was an envelope.

It was an older envelope, dated from the end of June, and how I could have missed it up until now is beyond me. I ripped it open, taking a look inside, and what I found took my breath away.

We received this amazing thank you note and wanted to share it with all of you because it is your generosity in donating that makes notes like this one possible...

I wanted to say a very special thank you for all you do for the NICU families at CCMC. It is a wonderful way to honor your daughter and all the other special children and families that have spent time in the NICU. Our son was recently born over 5 weeks early and while he was one of the bigger and healthier babies, we still spent 12 stressful days in the NICU.

While no one knows expects their baby to end up in the NICU, the incredible people that we met from the nurses, doctors and PCAs to the other families and graduates, made what could have been a trying time much easier. On a particularly stressful morning when we found out that Kellen's feeding tube had to be put back in over night because he didn't eat enough, I was sitting by his bed, pumping through tears and the social worker came around with these cute little preemie outfits and a tag from Doing Good in Her Name. It is sometimes the little things that get you through the rough parts. I of course went to your site as soon as I was home on the computer and was so moved by your story. Our time in the NICU definitely changed our lives. It is a place where you really experience how amazing and giving people are, where you are in awe of the medical miracles that exist today, and where you learn to appreciate each and every day to the fullest.

We've been home for several weeks now and I keep meaning to thank you and to inquire about donations and how the charity works. I have been collecting a bunch of items that I would like to donate and was curious if there was somewhere I could drop them off.

Thank you for your compassion and all the good you have done to help so many other families.

The donations came in last week, and what these elementary school students collected absolutely blew us away!

They collected bottles and bottle washers!

Plenty of pacifiers, teethers, and toys!

Books, CD's, crib sheets, some corner and outlet protectors...

A wonderful batch of homemade fleece blankets... (washed and bagged)

As well as store bought blankets, a duckie bath wrap, and some socks...

Complete with a detachable velcro tail!

In addition to the items collected, Stadley Rough's Families and Faculty donated $115 in checks, bringing our total raised to $925! Unbelievable. Second Drop Off A HUGE Success!

We had our second drop off with Mary, the amazing medical social worker that we were fortunate to work with when Peyton was at Connecticut Children's Medical Center, and WOW! your generosity over the last few months has been UNBELIEVABLE!

Nearly 700 items were tagged and boxed, so many items that we had to fold the back of our SUV down just to fit them all.

Clothing, toys, diapers, bottles, homemade blankets, pacifiers, hats, mobiles... we asked and you came through in a big way! The list of items dropped off for use by the critically ill infants and their families at CCMC goes on and on.

Mary met us on a Monday afternoon, and we went right to work,

transferring the donated items from our SUV to her car...

At one point we worried it might not all fit...

Then we worried that Mary might not fit after all these items were added...

The weather was much nicer for this drop off than it had been for the first one

(it was FREEZING that day),

and we were able to spend some time catching up,
and trying for a nice group shot...

Thank you so much to all those who made this second drop off possible. Your generosity, in both helping to honor Peyton's memory, and assisting these other little warriors and their families, has been awe inspiring.

We look forward to watching this initiative grow, and to sharing the news of more drop offs in the future.

6 Months...

It's hard to believe that we are already approaching the six month anniversary of this initiative! It seems like just yesterday that we looked at each other and said, "Let's do something, in Peyton's name. Something that brings some good out of all this pain." It was a conversation that has forever changed us.

When we spoke those words, we never could have imagined that so many people, from all over the world, would come together to help us honor our beautiful little Peyton, by donating to the cause of helping to make hospital life a little better for other critically ill infants and their families. The outpouring of items, financial donations, and hand made gifts, has been awe inspiring.

We are gearing up for another large drop off over the next week or so, and have two more batches of donations to post here coming in the next few days.

Thank you to all who have helped this initiative through donations, prayer, and spreading the word. At last count, the facebook group had over 450 fans, and we look forward to watching the awareness of this initiative grow.

We have nearly a carload of goodies to deliver, and three packages still to open, one coming ALL THE WAY FROM AUSTRALIA! Once we have gotten them up and posted (in the next few days) it will be time for our second drop off! We can't believe it!

When we first decided to start Doing Good In Her Name we had no idea how far the message would reach (donations have poured in from 14 States across the USA, England, British Columbia, Ontario & now, Australia), or just how generous a response there would be (see the tally box at the top right of this blog).

First we would really, really like to thank all those who have reached out and donated to our initiative so far. Your generosity has meant the world to us in wanting to honor the memory of our daughter Peyton, and to the critically ill infants and their families at CCMC who have benefited from them. We have been truly floored by your support and generosity, and look forward to watching this campaign grow and benefit more sick babies and their families.

The flow of donations has been fairly steady since the start of this initiative, which has been WONDERFUL, unfortunately it has been about a week since the last package arrived at the post office. :(

We know that there are a lot of great causes out there to support, and thank you for keeping us in mind. Each and every day, new groups of parents learn that their child is facing critical illness. Please help us show these warriors and their families that they are not alone. We would also appreciate if you could help us spread the word about Doing Good In Her Name. We received a wonderful box from

containing 40 prayer squares.

Much like prayer blankets, or prayer shawls, a person who makes prayer squares says a prayer for the recipient of the square as they are creating them. These squares are then given to families struggling during difficult times, as a reminder that they are not alone.

When we were in the hospital with Peyton, we were the recipients of two beautiful prayer shawls, and they brought us great comfort knowing that someone had been praying for our little girl while creating them. I will be sharing these squares with the Chapel Staff from CCMC, to share with families who they know will find comfort in receiving them. Danielle has also given me permission to share them with other mothers who are grieving their children.

Hello Binder Family,

My name is Nicole, and I wanted to thank you for the lovely hat my daughter is wearing on behalf of your foundation. We spent most of December and early January on the 8th floor, as she has had fevers and pneumonia.

Chandler is 3 and was diagnosed with ALL 2 weeks after her third birthday, this past September.

Peyton Elizabeth is a beautiful name for an angel. My thoughts and prayers are with you, as you continue to find the strength to help others in your daughter's name.
